What is the
Australian National Broadband Network?
The Australian National
Broadband Network is a next-generation broadband network designed for Australia’s future
needs. The network comprises three
technologies—optic fibre, fixed wireless and next-generation satellite–and will provide more
reliable, high-speed broadband access to all Australians.
How we’ll
connect Work has already begun on the NBN and, by the end of the 10-year rollout, NBN
Co plans to connect all Australian homes and businesses to this new high-speed broadband
network.
- 93 per cent of Australian premises will have access to the Australian
National Broadband Network through optic fibre, capable of providing broadband speeds of up to
one gigabit per second
- 7 per
cent of premises will have access to the NBN through next-generation fixed wireless and
satellite technologies, providing peak speeds of 12 megabits per
second.

The NBN will be
Australia’s first national wholesale-only, open access, high-speed broadband
network.
This means Australian National Broadband Network Co–the company established
by the government to design, build and operate the NBN–will roll out the network and sell wholesale
services to service providers, such as your internet or phone provider.
In turn, service providers will offer retail services to
consumers.
The NBN is the biggest telecommunications reform in Australia’s history
because it delivers separation between wholesale and retail service providers.
With uniform national wholesale pricing around Australia, the NBN will
ensure that every community in Australia has access to high-speed broadband at competitive
prices.
It means fairer infrastructure access for services providers, greater retail
competition and better services for families and businesses.

How much
faster will the National Broadband Network be?
The NBN will provide all users with access to speeds greater than what many people
experience on ADSL today, and will offer a more stable and reliable broadband service.
93 per cent of Australian premises will have access to the Australian National
Broadband Network through optic fibre to the premises, capable of providing broadband speeds of up to one gigabit
per second. The remaining 7 per cent of premises will have access to next-generation fixed wireless and
satellite technologies, providing peak speeds of 12 megabits per second.
The Australian National Broadband Network will give homes and businesses access to both high
download and upload speeds, which are essential for applications such as high-definition videoconferencing and the
sharing of large files. It will also significantly reduce download times for content with high bandwidth
requirements such as television programs, documentaries and movies.
